Overview

This redesign transforms Morehouse College’s digital presence with a cinematic, video-driven experience that immediately establishes the institution’s extraordinary 157-year legacy. The concept opens with an immersive 8-slide animated splash sequence featuring iconic alumni—Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson—creating an unforgettable first impression that no competitor can match.

The design employs a sophisticated dark theme with dramatic contrast, using Morehouse’s signature maroon (#840028) and gold (#C1A231) colors strategically throughout. Oswald display typography delivers bold headlines while Source Serif 4 provides elegant body text, creating a visual language that feels both prestigious and contemporary.

Following the splash sequence, visitors encounter a video background hero section with compelling statistics and clear calls-to-action. A scrolling alumni legacy marquee reinforces prestige, while carefully segmented audience paths guide prospective students, current students, alumni, and visitors to relevant content. The experience includes academic program showcases, news and events integration, a presidential message section, and conversion-focused closing CTAs.

Technical innovations include seamless video sync between splash and hero sections, 30-day cookie persistence for returning visitors (who skip directly to the homepage), and comprehensive accessibility considerations including reduced-motion support. The design positions Morehouse not just as an educational institution, but as a world-class brand experience that competes with premium consumer websites.

Morehouse College needed a website that authentically represents its prestigious legacy while competing for the attention of digitally-native prospective students. Key challenges included:

  • Current design didn’t reflect Morehouse’s status as a top-3 HBCU
  • Powerful alumni legacy (MLK, Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson) was underutilized
  • Homepage didn’t immediately communicate the unique value proposition
  • Mobile experience needed optimization for Gen Z browsing habits
  • Gap between the transformative on-campus experience and digital representation

We designed a cinematic, video-driven concept that achieved the highest evaluation score across multiple design directions. The solution includes:
